Back to school

I am so not a morning person.

This has become more evident to me as I have class at 9 in the morning Monday thru Thursday, and I spend half the class doing my darndest not to fall asleep.  If I lived closer to campus, it probably wouldn’t be quite so dramatic, but 7:30 am til 9 am is a really sucky time to be driving on Rt 1 here in Central Joisey.  And here’s me trying to give up soda (and thereby, caffeine)(and yes, that would be again…you can’t say I’m not persistent.) Possibly not smart.

I’m trying to figure out what country my professor originates from.  I’m thinking somewhere in the Eastern bloc of Europe, but I could be totally off.  All I know is that she kept saying “fluke-tuition” and I couldn’t figure out she was saying “fluctuation” until she wrote it down on an overhead transparency.

And my TA?  I think she’s French or possibly Spanish (yes, I realize they are completely different, but her accent is an interesting mix that I can’t quite sort out.) I’m not so sure how good she is as a teacher.  She knows her concepts, but she seems to have a difficult time conveying that to the students.  I miss my TA from last semester.

My goal, since I only have one class right now, is to get an A.  I think that would make me feel better about the whole thing.  I have yet to get an A in my science courses (unless you count Intro to Chem, which I don’t because pharm schools really won’t.)  Granted, I’ve gotten B’s, but I just don’t think that’s good enough.

Stopping by from Lady Blogger’s tea party! Good luck with school! I just graduated and I know how tough it can be!

Good luck from me too. I’m so old, the schools were made of stone. Stopping by from LBS.

Thanks so much for stopping by! School is a trip when you’re old enough to be some of your fellow students’ mom! Gah!

a ha! I just guessed on your about page that you were in Jersey and I was right. And by the way, I went to Rutgers too 😉 Many, many moons ago.

Nice to meet you “neighbor” and fellow Lady Blogger. As for not being allowed to pump your own gas, you’ll appreciate that when it’s hot as balls in the summer and snowing like a mofo in the winter. I know I do.

Good luck with class and the no soda thing, I made it 14 days once without soda. My husband held me down and my kids proceeded to pour it down my gullet. Aparently I get “moody” when I go sans-caffeine.

Oh, isn’t that the truth. My husband has offered to go buy me a 2 liter of Diet Dr. Pepper every other time I’ve tried in the past. Caffeine is an evil temptress!

      Thanks for stopping by!

Ah. Parting with caffeine can cause so much confusion. I’m trying right now, too, and I feel like I’ve been in a fog for two weeks. Blech! Stopping by from the Tea Party 🙂

About 16 years ago… I went cold turkey with caffeine. It was a decision I made after I got up one Friday morning, drove 2 hours to work, worked 12 hours, drove two hours home, drove an hour south to a wedding, left the wedding early to get home at midnight, pack the car and then drive to Rhode Island. I think I drank 4 pots of coffee that day, the last of which was beween midnight and my arrival in RI at 5 am the next day. I got into my destination and went right to sleep. This made me decide I didn’t really need the caffeine since it clearly wasn’t keeping me awake.

I had no headaches, no withdrawal symptoms, etc. I went a little over a year without eating or drinking anything that may have had caffeine — no coffee, no soda, no tea, no chocolate. Then I had a glass of iced tea at a party – to be social – and felt no rush from the caffeine. It was then that I decided to keep drinking it because, well, it had no impact on me and I liked coffee.

I guess my point is that I can stop drinking this stuff whenever I want to stop; that said, I don’t want to. Maybe if it were soda, I’d want to stop, but coffee? It’s liquid gold.

Out of curiosity — have you considered taking the train to school? When I wsa taking summer classes at RU in NB, I took the train from Princeton Junction. 40 minutes there and back, almost no troubles at all, and I could work, study or sleep — all of which beats sitting in traffic on Rt. 1 at any hour of the day.

It might be different if I liked coffee (which we both know I don’t.) Caffeine has little to no affect on me when I’m drinking it (it doesn’t really keep me awake), but evidently it plays a number on me when I stop having it (unless it’s the artificial sweeteners from the soda, which I don’t think is the case because the headache is normally abated with Excedrin.)

And you, Mr. No Withdrawals, never gets drunk, no hang overs…your liver must be made out of steel or something.

We have looked at the train…the cost to park there and get the pass was more than it would cost me to drive to and from (even with the discount I would get as a student.) Add on top of that the fact that it’s the weekend buses running at RU, and I have to get to Douglass from the train station in a decent amount of time…Granted, we were looking at the Hamilton station as that is closest to us, and the cost of the pass is more, as well as the cost of parking. It might be something we’ll have to explore again, though. We’ll see.

SO hard to try to learn from a teacher whose speech you can’t understand. tried to warn my eldest about this before he went off to college and he didn’t believe me . . .live and learn!

    • gritlysweettea

I think I’ve figured out that the professor (lecturer) is actually from Greece (oops) and the TA is Italian (double oops.)

It’s actually very rare for me to have a ton of difficulty with accents (I’m used working with doctors from a lot of different countries), but sometimes…oof. Thankfully, the professor knows her accent can be difficult to understand. She’s actually quite cute about it. There is no distinct difference between her pronunciations of molaLity and molaRity…so she calls them little m and Capital M.

Good luck in school! I went back to school 2 years ago and it was difficult at first but finally, this is great!!!

    • gritlysweettea

It’s definitely different…I’ve been to college before, but it was a two year college and I was fresh out of high school. Now I’m in my 30’s at a traditional 4 year college. There is a completely different dynamic, but I really quite like it (no matter how much I bemoan it.)

Once I’m actually awake, I’m a total morning person. I feel like I can accomplish a LOT before 10 a.m.

    • gritlysweettea

You know, I totally get that. And if I can drag my butt to bed at a decent time, and not lay awake in bed for hours, I feel like I have the ability to solve world hunger, stop war, and cure cancer all before 9:30 am. Unfortunately, I’m suffering from insomnia, and that just doesn’t seem to be happening..

Good luck with school! I’m in Central Jersey about 10 minutes away from Rutgers! I got my J.D. many years ago from Rutgers Law School in Newark.

    • gritlysweettea

That’s awesome! I’m about 40 minutes away in Central Jersey (near Trenton.) I’ve only been here about a year (NJ), so I’m not going to say I’m in love with the state, but I love being in school and I quite like Rutgers. I’m hoping to get into the PharmD program…

      Next fall, organic chemistry. Woo-hoo!

  • Laura

I’m not a morning person either. It takes a lot to get me out of bed before 9am so I completely know how you feel. Hope it gets easier for you!!
